Thank you for sharing your thinking. Like yo...Suz,
Thank you for sharing your thinking. Like you, I'm wondering how I can take Sara's message and share it with adults. Last year one of the teachers requested a meeting to share her work with an LGBTQ study group with me. She shared books the group had discussed and shared situations that arise in our work. My favorite takeaway from our conversation was when she said that other teachers need to read these books so they can grow their understanding and perspective. It's where it starts. We have to grow in order to be able to support children in the complicated work of social comprehension. I'm still pondering my steps moving forward. As you demonstrated in your response, literature is always a great place to begin.

CathyCathyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08233792477358685156noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7411407.post-35749054005243283822018-07-18T19:25:51.193-07:002018-07-18T19:25:51.193-07:00Wow, great post.Wow, great post.Mitchel Starchttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12771294990020295002noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7411407.post-77478486407283974262018-07-14T03:36:29.307-07:002018-07-14T03:36:29.307-07:00Across the chapters, I've been struck by the i...Across the chapters, I've been struck by the importance of weaving this identity work through the year. I appreciate the way it begins with our identity, but then always moves us back to community. I suppose the first step ...Oh, the lenses we wear. I suppose the first step is knowing we wear them. Like you, I wear of a lens of privilege. I've been fortunate to become more aware of this thanks to books, Twitter, an education, working with families from different backgrounds, and my youngest daughter. ;o) The discussion about microaggressions was of great interest. It's uncomfortable to know we may say or do something that hurts someone else because of the lens we wear. As I listen to others, read social media, or follow the news, I'm often surprised at some people have no idea of their privilege and are unable to see things from another perspective. Hopefully, through conversations like these, we will all continue to raise our awareness and grow in our understanding of others. Ok. I talked at him about microaggressions. I started just as Sara would by asking him if he had heard the word before. :) He hadn't! Anyway, we are opposite too. When we were younger, our different windows or lenses to the world created some challenges for us. But in the past 15 years, I have come to rely on his take to provide me with a more rounded view of the issues I face in my job (and life). In asking him for his perspective, I have continually worked on identifying my biases.

Do I still make bad decisions or say the wrong thing? Yes. I am a work in progress.

Thanks for sharing on a personal level. I appreciate it. :)Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12673579851516502643noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7411407.post-72128479819248042472018-07-12T08:33:58.302-07:002018-07-12T08:33:58.302-07:00Very honest self assessment! You make a very valid point! But the identity work we do together allows us to make connections and then go deeper into who we really are, what our stories mean, and what we can do next to make a difference in this world.
